Roderic Spingler was staying on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for the winter when he had a fall and broke his right thighbone.
After having surgery to repair the break, Spingler needed rehabilitation before he could return to his summer home in Auburn, New York. He came to Life Care Center of Hilton Head on Jan. 31, 2019, for physical therapy.
“When I came to Life Care, I was basically bedridden,” Spingler remembered.
He even needed some assistance with his sitting balance.
Physical therapists, under the guidance of Scott Vaigneur, physical therapist assistant, worked with Spingler to increase his strength and mobility, especially after he was cleared by his doctor to put weight on his right leg again.
“Mr. Spingler had to fight in order to get ahead of the odds,” said Vaigneur. “He won this battle with determination.”
Spingler left the facility on April 10, at a supervision level with his bed mobility and able to walk up to 150 feet at a time with a front-wheeled walker and go up or down two steps at a time. He returned to his New York home.
“Through the dedication and knowledge of the PT staff, I am walking and able to resume my pre-injury lifestyle,” said Spingler.
