When Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, resident Marilyn Miller fractured her right pelvis in a fall, she needed rehabilitation to recover her independence.
Life Care Center of Hilton Head was a convenient choice for her physical therapy.
When Miller came to the rehab and skilled nursing center on June 19, she needed moderate assistance for standing balance and some assistance to walk, get in and out of bed and balance while sitting. She was at a significant fall risk and had hip pain.
Therapists used multiple tools and exercises to help Miller regain independence. The NuStep® and Omnicycle® seated exercise machines, as well as ankle weights and stretchy resistance bands, helped her strengthen her upper and lower body and core, and various balance tasks and the Biodex balance machine helped her get steadier on her feet. She also used OmniVR™, an interactive video gaming system designed to help rehab patients practice functional movements
On July 16, 2018, Miller was able to return home. She was able to walk community distances without an assistive device.
“Scott [Vaigneur] is a wonderful physical therapist assistant,” said Miller. “My progress has been better than my expectations.”
Miller continued physical therapy at Life Care Center of Hilton Head as an outpatient through Sept. 27 to further her independence and was able to go from walking with a front-wheeled walker to using no assistive device. She is even driving again.
